English Pre-intermediate

The level 1 Foundation course offers students an integrated course of language systems and skills. Pathways Reading, Writing and Critical Thinking focuses on reading and writing skills and there is more emphasis on developing critical thinking skills through reading and writing. The other skills will be covered by Pathways Listening, Speaking and Critical Thinking. These books are accompanied by an electronic workbook for students. There is also online activities in Moodle that goes in line with both books. 

Learning Outcomes

1. Language Systems: (LS)

• Recognize, understand, and use a variety of grammatical structures and syntax. (LSG)
• Enrich and develop lexis, knowledge of idioms, and functional language structures. (LSV)
• Recognize and use appropriate expressions in correct contexts.(LSD)
• Understand and use appropriate word- and sentence-level pronunciation. (LSP)

2. Skills: (SK)

• Improve reading abilities in skimming and scanning, and develop higher-order skills such as prediction, deduction and inference (SKR)
• Engage in the writing process and demonstrate control over sentence, paragraph and essay  structure to effectively communicate ideas. (SKW)
• Understand and identify the context, theme, topic, and details of listening texts.(SKL)
• Speak confidently and appropriately during a range of tasks and engage in conversations of various topics. (SKS)

3. Study Skills: (SS)

• Manage time and be responsible for their learning, such as creating timetables, vocabulary logs, etc. (MTR)
• Find and use appropriate sources in research and be able to summarize, paraphrase, and cite sources. (RS)
• Identify key information, write and organize notes. (TN)
• Create and give a presentation using presentation structure and speak confidently and clearly. (GP)
