CLFS English for Academic Programs

The English Communication Skills 1 (ENGL 101), English Communication Skills 2 (ENGL 102), and Technical Writing and Presentation for Engineering (ENGR 202) are intensive English language courses in both General English and English for academic purposes to help prepare students cope with the language demands of their academic studies conducted in English.  They are also intended to offer students an ample number of opportunities to develop their English language abilities through systematic teaching, practical tasks, continuous assessment and a large amount of exposure to the English language for students to successfully pursue university studies in their areas of specializations.  Each course consists of two components: a core component designed to meet students’ general use of English for communicative purposes and a specialized component to help students cope with the English of their academic studies.

The main objectives of the Academic Program English Language courses are the following:

  • To prepare students for their academic studies in English in addition to the communicative use of English in different general settings and situations;
  • and help the students cope with the language requirements and communicative demands of their academic specialized courses in the different colleges of the University; and
  • To equip students with fundamental study and academic skills considered essential to attain high levels of achievement in their university studies.

The methodology to be followed in these courses is the communicative approach of teaching which focuses on skills and functions required to perform efficiently in academic contexts across core subject areas.  These courses will be taken by students alongside their academic subjects.
